As MAF Chair through August 2010, I will do my best for this association.
The masonry industry is currently in a tough time, but we are taking the two year strategic plan installed in September 2008, and making it our MAF playbook.
Make sure to include Masonry activities and dues payment on your list of things 'to do' during 2010. The growth of your business and this industry is on OUR LIST!
Member volunteers from around the state and an excellent support staff are working together to stop the decline in market share, increase membership, increase local chapters, and sell our product to owners, architects and design-build firms.
We will be incorporating Masonry Association of Florida into our business' and business into our MAF meetings, inclusive of committee reports, training, competitions and awards.
Take a moment to visit www.FloridaMasonry.com , mark your calendar for upcoming meetings in your area and check out the new 'area blogs' for local information in the Membership section. Please consider getting involved in Promasonry, apprenticeship training and other MAF activities.
Enclosed is the invoice for your 1st quarter dues which our hardworking association staff has incorporated to include credit card payments for annual, quarterly or the new 'easy-pay' monthly payments. If you have questions, please contact the association office, Sandy Cinque sandy@floridamasonry.com or 561-305-0892.
Your continuing support and participation will help us achieve our mission to regain masonry market share in Florida and ensure a secure future for the masonry industry.
Let me know personally if you have any other comments or suggestions in the coming year.

Chairman's Comments
Strength in Numbers
On behalf of the Masonry Association of Florida’s Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your financial and organizational support as we look forward to even greater happenings in 2010. Certainly this industry is going through tough economic times, but the MAF with its strong volunteer base and excellent staff, is implementing the 2008 strategic plan, which will provide the framework for masonry to recover with the construction turnaround, and ultimately grow and thrive for years to come. The MAF is more than just a trade association; it is a business, albeit non-profit, but a business working for its members to strengthen relationships, and provide informational tools and incentives for each company to increase market share and add to its bottom line.

The MAF has the Pro-Masonry Committee working with chapters in monitoring projects from development stage to choice of materials so that it can promote masonry before decision time. The Awards Committee plans to reach out to the AIA next year in order to recognize and honor the architectural profession for designing masonry. The Convention Committee is currently working on making next year’s convention at the Sirata Hotel at St. Pete Beach, a gathering place for fellowship, competitions, business meetings, and all-around fun. Membership has targeted goals of increasing members, adding new chapters and also to provide a source for benefits specific to each interested company. The MAF also closely works with its partner, the Florida Masonry Apprenticeship and Educational Foundation in retaining existing apprentice training programs and creating new training sites where needed. And finally, the MAF has quite simply the hardest-working organizational staff in construction. In 2010, we will move forward as an association, strengthening the masonry name, strengthening our cause of Cheaper-Faster-Better, strengthening market share, and strengthening our investment in the future. Thank you.

A Member benefit short story A member of a Masonry Association of Florida, previously a regular participant, had recently stopped going to meetings. After a few months, the chairman of the local association decided to pay the member a visit. It was a chilly evening and member was at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for the visit, the member welcomed the visitor, directed him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited. The visitor made himself at home but said nothing.
In silence, they both contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the visitor took the fire tongs, picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone then he sat back in his chair, still silent. The member watched this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember's flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead.
Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The visitor glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.
As the visitor reached the door to leave, the member thanked him for his visit and especially for the 'fiery' industry conversation and promised to return to the association meetings.
We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little. Consequently, few listen. Sometimes the words that make the biggest impact are those left unspoken. PARTICIPATE and benefit from the warmth of the fire-as we 'sell' masonry systems in Florida

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Founding Members to date. Although we have a long way to go with membership and are going through some rough times, now is our chance to sell masonry back to our builders and architects and get masonry recognized as the leading building material in Florida.
Don't stand on the side lines. Get your local membership dues to your chapters and your state sponsorship in and help us get our industry back on track! Join Online!
There are great activities in process (check the eNews calendar on http://www.mafl.org/) around the state. I appreciate what our MAF staff is doing to support, promote, organize, help buy back our market and communicate to membership as evidenced in this monthly E-news. Everyone have a great month.
Thank you for continuing to

February 2009
Have you caught up with the 'NEW' MAF, or attended one of the membership drives that have happened around the state in January and February or participated in the ProMasonry meeting in Orlando at the FC&PA building on February 4th? If not, be sure to visit http://www.mafl.org/and get involved in the NEW MAF activities. The members page has copies of the new state by-laws and anti trust policy, state pledge forms, a membership packet and a copy of the powerpoint presentation showing the goals and objectives of the NEW Masonry Association of Florida. If you haven't heard Pat McLaughlin's presentation, the goal is to "SELL masonry systems in Florida"....nothing more, nothing less.
